My good friend Heather over at Mandrake Tattoo in Raynham, MA (great artist! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, HER!  Go see her for custom work!) strongly suggested I go lighter blonde this time with my hair.  Since we have been friends FOREVER I decided to follow her advice.  I was off to buy my latest hair coloring.  I purchased a light blonde color, un-red drops to add, and a stronger color lifter than I have used in the past.  Please note that I am NOT a hairdresser, nor do I claim to be. There have been many hairdressers in the family and I spent plenty of my childhood in beauty salons….but I am not trained as one.  THAT SAID, I am sharing my hair saga to tell you what I do….NOT that you should do it the same way!

The last version was red underneath and medium blonde on the top.  This time I only used one color, the light blonde which I added the lifter and the un-red.  I was hoping to take some of the red color out but it didn’t really lift the red.  Even the medium blonde didn’t lift much.  The roots came out a beautiful light blonde color though.  SO next time I will go to the maximum color lifter and see what happens.  Still trying for the light blonde Heather 🙂 Here are a few quick pics.

I managed to keep the two-tone effect using one color this time.  Next time I will have to get two colors again.  I will say it is challenging coloring your own hair and not getting the color stains all around your ears, neck, cheeks, and hairline!

What to do with braids or hair in general.

What to do with braids or hair in general.

Sometimes I just get lost into searching for things online.  It is especially easy to do on forums with people with similar interests. I recently found a conversation that contained some interesting links on hair. Reading the conversation  reminded me of a visit to a historical home I went to in New England(unfortunately I can’t think of the name of the house at this moment).  Within the house they had many artifacts from the original family as well as others from the time period.  The items that attracted my attention were some rings.  The rings were made of braided human hair.  I had tried to get some photos of the rings that I saw there but the glass and lighting made it impossible to get a good shot.

When I looked at this site I was excited to see clear images of some jewelry made with hair.  It displays images of Victorian hair jewelry.  I am particualrly fond of the VICTORIAN hair purse pocketbook charm, , 7/8″.  Scroll down on their site to see the image.  There are more I like as well, but I particularly like that one.

Another use of hair that I saw on this conversation (oh I should mention it was Ravelry!) was for cleaning up oil spills. Has anyone heard of this? I must admit I only briefly looked this site over.  I do plan on giving it more of a thorough read soon.  Here is a direct quote from their website, “The mission of Matter of Trust is to Link ideas, spark action and materialize sustainable systems. We like to mimick how Mother Nature integrates enduring cycles and provides access to necessities in abundance. We concentrate on manmade surplus, natural surplus and eco-educational programs. The results are worthwhile, common sensical and often enchanting.”  The more I read on their site as I write this the more I want to read on!  Definitely worth a look!

Here is another link to read about a Romanian woman that has woven her hair into clothes for herself.

So I must say thank you again to my fellow Ravelry people that continue to give me an ongoing surplus of goodies for my senses.

I am feeling hooked on the two-tone hair…at least for now.  My sister-in-law recently re-did  my hair for me.  Turned into quite the family event.  Mom took me to the beauty supply store to pick out the new colors.  After much deliberation and a VERY patient Mom, I decided to use a light brown for the top color and a vibrant red for underneath.  With bag of hair products in hand I made my way to my latest hair accomplice, my sis-in-law.  She was very brave, donned her rubber gloves and dove in!  I had a great time chatting away the afternoon.  Here are a few pics my brother took for me.

Yeah....

Yeah....

So here is where it got a little complicated….the bottom color was done processing before the top color was cooked.   SO we had to wash out the bottom layer and leave the dye on the top layer.  It started off smoothly until the water started flowing down my back.  Well actually that part I was okay with….BUT then it pooled into the seat of my pants…aka my butt!  I jumped up and tried to turn around my body while keeping my head in the sink.  An acrobat I am not. Wound up with a puddle of water on her floor.  She took all that in stride….I think that was when the blueberry vodka shots happened. lol!  Ah good times 🙂 We had fun!  Here are a few quick shots of the finished colors…actually they have faded a little from shampooing.

Braid

Braid

The braided hairstyle is probably the main reason I like the two tone hair.  I love the look of the braids.  I was surprised the light brown looks as light as it does.  Not sure if I will go darker, I still have several weeks before I have to decide on what color to use next.  The quick braids I put in here were just an impulse to take some pictures of the do.  One of these days I will style it up and take proper pictures.

I have been a whirlwind of projects and things to-do lately. I have been taking some pictures for a non-profit organization.  I DO love to take pictures.  I am working on art.  Mainly buddhist inspired images at the moment. I just completed the sixth image which I plan on digitally joining to make a compilation of the painted images. They are a light-hearted and fun series. I am also still working on needlework projects. The major ones being 3 good vibes cuddlies. I want to make myself a lacy meditation shawl and am hoping to get a pattern I asked for as a birthday gift. Spring cleaning in preparation for company coming in two weeks….not that I wouldn’t do the cleaning anyway but it is motivation to not procrastinate.  I have a couple of RAK packages to send out for a Ravelry group.  Not to mention that I am already planning some major projects to undertake in June.   I plan on approaching a local charity that I am hoping to work with on some handmade items for donation or fundraising.  How is it that JUNE is just around the corner!?  Time to knit for a bit before bed. Yes I know I rambled on about what I am up to  but I have enough bulleted lists right now.

I am unable to post pictures at the moment so I just wanted to post a quick note to say that my blogging will return full force mid-next week.  Right now I am re-connecting with family and old friends.  Time seems frozen in my mind.  The graying hair and added wrinkles are only visible to me if I stop and focus on them.  Otherwise the re-connection feels as if I have never left. My perceptions leave me feeling as if I just saw all these wonderful souls yesterday.

My sis-in-law colored my hair for me and the red is a beautiful deep color that glows in the sun.  I will have pictures of that next week too!

Have to run for now!

This past week has felt like a roller-coaster.

Come on, admit it, you have them too!  One minute you’re up…the next you’re down….hang on tight for the corner….the expected, yet somehow unexpected, drop out from under you….then you coast again.  I wasn’t feeling well and got a text from a friend to look outside my door.  I looked outside and there was a hot coffee from Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf.  There was also a 10 day pass to a local yoga studio!  What a perfect combination for me.  Many thanks dear-heart!!!

A major task this week has been paperwork.  I managed to complete two of the six major ones I have to finish.  So back to the papers for me after I upload this blog.  Two down, four to go!  The cat has been an added incentive to finish the mound o’ papers. She decided to climb all over the piles on my desk to wake me up.  The sound of falling pages definitely got me out of bed!

Thought I had completed my second painting but a day later I noticed a detail I left off.  So that is back into the rotation.  Won’t take long to remedy, but I will need a steady hand for the fine detail.  I like to work on multiple projects at the same time, so I will begin my third and  fourth at the same time.

Another boost to my week was $20 dollars for Valentine’s treats.  So, I decided to buy some hair dye and have some fun.  I was going to try to do it myself.  I scoured the web looking for 2-tone hair color pictures.  I even tried You Tube.  I managed to find a few pointers on how to do the process.  I am very grateful for my girlfriends!  This time it was Jeanine to the rescue!  She came over and colored my hair for me.  Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE to go to the salon because I LOVE the hair-stylist I have, (she is AWESOME at her art), but that visit just is not in my current budget.  BUT, having girl-time and $15 dollars was in my budget this week!  Priceless! Thanks again Jeanine!

This is the back view when braided.  Just a fun thing to try, at least once in my life.  So many things to experience.

I’m grateful that the sun is shining and it is a beautiful day.  I am also grateful to have all of you in my life.  Thanks !

Yesterday evening as I sipped chai with my friend Marie, I began to share some of the new things I discovered while online.  I told her that I would forward her the information.  She asked me if the links were on my blog.  I thought about it for a second and said I really should do that!  I’m not sure if venturing this way will make my blog go in too many different directions but I am going to try for awhile.  Feels right at this moment and as I am focusing on living in the present….here I go!

My fiber work keeps me researching new patterns, techniques, and various groups for fiber arts.  More ideas for my hat-making Resolution. While browsing some groups on Ravelry.com I saw a mention of this YouTube on TINY knitting.  Check it out!

This is a video of some VERY small needle work. Miniature Knitting by Althea Crome, her website is bugknits.com. Continuing with my fascination with needles and hooks here is another YouTube I found inspiring.

Now I want to make dolls or marionettes…ah so many inspiring things in life!
